CASE STUDY

FSCNow
The Farmingdale State College Magazine / PRINT & MICROSITE

PROJECT SUMMARY |
Creation of the annual magazine of Farmingdale State College and accompanying microsite.

PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES |
Project Manager, Creative Director, Art Director, UI/UX Designer

GOALS |
The objective of FSCNow was to heighten the awareness of Farmingdale State College, especially as it is enjoying unprecedented growth, renovation, and new construction, and the addition of new academic programs, including its first Master's degree. To that end, our specific objectives were to:

  • Highlight the achievements and innovations of our faculty through feature stories.

  • Highlight achievements of FSC students through individual profile stories.

  • Demonstrate commitment to improving the surrounding community.

  • Demonstrate commitment to sustainability and green energy practices for a better future for FSC.

  • Focus on our successful alumni and their achievements after their time at FSC.

  • Appeal to our alumni through our before-and-after piece which highlights images of our past juxtaposed with photos of current progress around campus.

  • Focus on Farmingdale State College’s partnerships with local businesses and how they benefit our students’ growth and success in the workplace.

  • Include an opportunity for interested parties to donate to the FSC Foundation.

  • Increase distribution and viewership while maintaining or reducing costs.

SOLUTIONS |
Creation of a magazine and accompanying microsite that includes large, dynamic photos, and compelling articles.

  • BUDGET
The FSCNow Magazine is designed and written completely in-house keeping production expenses limited to the size of the print run.

  • CONTENT
Story development guidelines were created to include three students, three faculty, and three alumni profiles; Article and feature stories highlight campus capital improvements as well as new program deve
lopment and accreditations. Advertisements were created to feature key donors and enrollment with the alumni organization to foster continuing engagement.

RESULTS |

The FSCNow magazine has printed five editions and continues to create an engaging publication as we move forward into our sixth issue. From the textural cover treatment to the extended perforated panel on the back cover, all details of the magazine were given careful consideration and purposeful design decisions were implemented to create more than just an impression on the reader, but an experience. This experience is further enhanced with the accompanying microsite that provides extended content in the form of additional photography and videos. This blended approach combining print and online mediums breathes new life into story-telling.

  • SUCCESSES
FSCNow has been used as a showpiece for many external constituencies and continues to be the highlight of FSC. The magazine remains focused on promoting college profiles and advancements and continues to receive positive feedback from readers.

  • DISTRIBUTION
Since its inauguration, the magazine distribution has changed. At the onset printed magazines were the primary focus for distribution with the option to link to the additional content available on the microsite. In the five years of circulation since, the distribution has flipped and the microsite is circulated year-round with a social media drip campaign highlighting the profiles included in the current issue. Digital distribution includes 100,000+ alumni and the FSC campus community. The print magazines are now an exclusive form of distribution provided to college presidents, guidance counselors, legislators, business partners, and prospective donors.

  • MICROSITE
    With
the evolution of the microsite's distribution, we continue to add new and dynamic content to this robust and cost-effective medium. This included a complete redesign with the development of the most recent issue increasing site views by over 400%. As cybersecurity, accessibility, and responsiveness have evolved so have the behind-the-scenes programming and development.
